Additional Trustees Needed

Wirksworth_PoolWe are looking for people who are interested in making a difference in their community to join our Board of Trustees.

We have vacancies for three new Trustees to join our existing small team who play a vital role in the work of our charity.

David Baker, Chair of Trustees comments: “We are keen to hear from anyone who would like to help us. No particular qualifications are required to be a Trustee, but specific skill sets in finance, law, HR and/or co-ordinating and submitting grant applications would be very useful. We are also looking for one of the new Trustees to become our new treasurer.”

Trustees undertake the role on an unpaid, voluntary basis, and attend a meeting once a month for around two hours with pro-active members undertaking tasks in between. Being a trustee is a rewarding role, which helps to safeguard the future of the pool.

Wirksworth Group Set to Make a Big Splash!

Wirksworth Swimming Pool is set to get a new lease of life thanks to a team of committed local residents.

Thanks to a group of residents the outlook now looks bright for the future of Wirksworth swimming pool – following Derbyshire Dales District Council’s (DDDC) decision to review the management and governance of the pool.

Since 2009 Rural Action Derbyshire (RAD) and Derbyshire Dales CVS (DDCVS) have been reviewing usage of the pool, community support and the options for operating it. During this time, they engaged with a team of residents who expressed an interest in becoming trustees for the pool. Today, that same group is forming a charitable business which aims to take ownership of the pool during spring 2012.

A spokesperson for the Wirksworth Swimming Pool Working Group comments: “We appreciate Derbyshire Dales District Council’s decision to pass this pool into community ownership has not been welcomed by everyone: some voicing their desire for it to remain with the authority. However, we feel, having spent two years involved with the project and witnessing the pressure to cut services and spending within local authorities, that the future of Wirksworth’s pool will be more secure as a result of our actions.

Wirksworth has a fantastic swimming pool, which is treasured by the local community. Sadly in recent years, it has been plagued with maintenance issues and staff changes. Under community control Wirksworth pool will be our only priority, and we will be dedicated to restoring and developing it into a first class community facility.

We will focus on what Wirksworth pool does best. It is loved by parents and carers who can sit an arm’s length away from apprehensive toddlers and children as they learn to swim independently. Its warm waters are appreciated by local adults who attend aquafit and physio swim sessions for their health and wellbeing. We will retain these qualities and build a dedicated team who will bring back the continuity and reliability of service that residents need.

We are under no illusions about the task ahead, but feel with the skills set of the group and financial assistance pledged from Derbyshire Dales District Council and Wirksworth Town Council we can make this a success.

In the months ahead we will be recruiting a Swimming Pool Manager and Swimming Teacher and we would also love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering or joining our group to help promote, maintain and develop the pool.”
